What Happens If You Don’t Change Your Oil?

banner service

Although it is often overlooked, motor oil is an essential component of your vehicle. What is the purpose of motor oil? It lubricates the moving components of your engine to decrease friction, boost efficiency, and minimize damage to the engine. So what happens if you don’t change your oil? It could lead to costly repairs down the road.

Over time, engine oil starts to break down and can become contaminated with dirt and debris. Because of this, the oil does not lubricate the engine as it should, leading to more friction. As friction increases, that heat can start to damage the engine. If your vehicle is in need of an oil change, rely on the experts at Reeves Volkswagen.

What Does Motor Oil Do?

In addition to lubricating the engine components, motor oil serves other purposes as well:

  • The main role of motor oil is to reduce wear and tear on moving parts due to friction.
  • Motor oil with dispersants helps to remove engine sludge.
  • Detergents in motor oil assist in keeping the engine clean.
  • When changed regularly, motor oil can help neutralize acids that form from fuels, improve piston ring seals, and cool the engine by moving heat away.

How Often Should I Change My Vehicle’s Oil?

In the past, it was recommended that your vehicle undergo an oil change every 3,000 miles. Because of advancements in oil and automotive technology, it is now possible to go 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil change services. This can vary, however, depending on how you drive and the type of vehicle that you own.

How Do I Change the Oil Myself?

Changing the oil yourself is actually quite simple. If you prefer to do your own maintenance, just follow the steps below. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual before you start so you know what type of motor oil your vehicle requires.

  1. Jack your car up with jack stands or steel ramps.
  2. Find the oil drain plug on the bottom of your oil pan underneath your engine. Place an oil basin directly underneath the plug, then unscrew the plug and allow the old oil to drain out completely. This could take a little bit of time (approximately 15 minutes).
  3. Once you find the oil filter, use an oil filter wrench to remove it. You will want to keep the oil basin in place because a small amount of oil may continue to drain.
  4. Grab your new filter and remember to rub a bit of oil around the rubber seal – this ensures your filter is watertight and is an essential step.
  5. Tighten the filter by hand when it is properly in place.
  6. After the old oil is removed and the filter has been replaced, you will need to remove the oil cap. Add in the amount of oil your vehicle requires according to manufacturer guidelines, and put the cap back in place.
  7. This is a good time to check the oil level. If it is properly filled, you are ready to hit the roads of Wesley Chapel.
